When thinking about orthodontics, people tend to think of teens and pre-teens with braces. However, there are many reasons that your children should visit an orthodontist much earlier. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than 7 years old. This appointment can shed light on issues that need to be resolved immediately to prevent further damage. Though some alignment issues can be corrected when patients are 11 or 12 when they have all of their adult teeth, other alignment issues need to be corrected early. Crooked teeth can cause uneven wear to other teeth or even gum and bone loss due to trauma to the tooth when a child bites together. Bringing your child in for early orthodontic treatment can be advantageous in:
  • Guiding their jaw growth and permanent teeth
  • Correcting negative oral habits
  • Improving your child’s appearance and self-confidence
  • Improving how their lips meet
  • Lowering the risk of trauma to their front teeth
