My Transformation from A Self-Conscious 11 Year Old

As a very self-conscious eleven-year-old child, I was cursed with severe overjet or “buck teeth”. I welcomed the idea of braces and sought out an orthodontic evaluation in my hometown of Jonesboro, AR. At that evaluation, I met my orthodontist, Dr. Scott Allen, who informed me of my treatment options. Additionally, I learned that I would be a more complex case due to the fact that I was congenitally missing my maxillary lateral incisors. I had never realized that two of my permanent teeth, the upper ones 2nd from the middle, had never developed.

Arkansas Mission of Mercy

This past weekend I had the privilege of participating in the Arkansas Mission of Mercy. This event, also known as ArMOM, is an event where dentists from all parts of the state provide free dental treatment for underserved Arkansans. This year the event took place at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. As an orthodontist, I myself wondered if I was going to be able to participate. There was no way I could perform orthodontic treatment in just two days! But before anyone becomes an orthodontist, they are trained as a general dentist. So this was a unique opportunity to put those skills learned in dental school to good use.
